Our Story It’s not a phase


Initially, we were working with the idea of producing the best "authentic and traditional" hand roll experience. Fresh, simple, and tasty – it was going to be a classic sushi bar through and through. However, we realized that launching another traditional hand roll bar was a concept that has been done before, done well, and done right. And in a city with hundreds, if not thousands, of sushi restaurants, we knew that we had be a just little bit more than the norm. To challenge the status quo and elevate the community with a truly distinctive hand roll experience, we decided to turn ROL into a “contemporary” hand roll bar.

They say you can’t go wrong with the classics, so we definitely still have those on our menu - yellowtail, salmon, and blue crab hand rolls just to name a few. But sometimes we’ll feel a little ambitious and do something bold like stack A5 wagyu beef, fatty toro tuna, Santa Barbara uni, and caviar over an open-faced hand roll and call it a day. As you can see, whether it’s conventional or avant-garde, there’s something for everyone to enjoy, traditionalists and modernists alike.

Our Sauces The choice is yours


Does sushi need sauce? A debate that has lasted decades (probably), yet the answer is still unclear. At ROL, our answer is yes and no — eat your hand rolls however you like. But with that being said, you NEED to try our sauces. We proudly make our sauces in-house with a focus on subtly elevating the flavor of every bite — choose from offerings that include Truffle Soy Sauce, Yuzu Kosho, Kizami Wasabi, and Goma Kabayaki.

I mean, it is a hand roll bar, right? Try one (or two, or three) of our signature cocktails. From our fruity signature Sumo Diet made with rum, dragonfruit, and egg foam, to our spicy Hot Phil made with mezcal, spicy gochujang, agave, and lime. As you can see, our cocktails are just as contemporary as our hand rolls. And, of course, we also have beer, sake, and spirits.

What makes us contemporary? Contemporary is defined as the "art of today", an ideology that we proudly roll with. We'll gladly admit that we don’t have any notable achievements in sushi making, but what we do have is an incredible appreciation for the concept of sushi and the impact that it's made in food history. We’re holding this appreciation tightly as we balance the fine between offering a "traditional" sushi experience and a "contemporary" experience that provides creative offerings. We want to bring food to the table that just tastes good, tradition aside.
